William Castle was an American film producer, director, writer and occasionally actor. He was born in New York City on April 24th, 1914. He got his start in Broadway at age twenty-three doing a variety of odd jobs. The work eventually enabled him to direct his own features, beginning with the 1943 "Boston Blackie" film The Chance of a Lifetime. Castle was known for incorporating gimmicks into his film work. These movies were ambitiously promoted and due to their low-budge, were able to turn a profit and gain some level of notoriety within the industry. The two most famous films under Castle's career was the 1959 Vincent Price vehicle House on Haunted Hill, followed in 1960 with 13 Ghosts.
