Baum got his start writing screenplays for episodes of ABC's Afterschool Special before moving on to several notable film roles including The Sender, Secret Weapons and The Manhattan Project. Between 1985 and 1987, Baum wrote six episodes of the psycho-thriller series The Hitchhiker. His first work for Wes Craven was writing the script for the 1990 film Night Visions. Afterward, he started on Nightmare Cafe and received a "created by" and producer's credit on all six episodes of the series. He followed this up with Witness to the Execution in 1994 and Kidnapped: In the Line of Duty in 1996. In 2000, Baum wrote the script for the telemovie Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula where he was credited as just Tom Baum.
