The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an American film series of the horror genre with an emphasis on the psycho-thriller and slasher subgenres. The series was created by director, producer and screenwriter Tobe Hooper and producer/writer Kim Henkel. The franchise consists of the original series and a remake series. The original film series included two initial installments, an unrelated quasi-remake/sequel, an equally unrelated direct-to-video sequel, and a quasi-canonical 3D feature film sequel. In 2003, a remake of the original film was produced by New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes, which also included a prequel film in 2006.

The premise of the series revolves around a family of sadistic murderous cannibals that operate out of a farmhouse in West Texas. The remake series re-imagines the original characters with different names and characterizations, but the thematic elements of both families are similar. In the original series, the Sawyer family terrorized a group of five youths that had the misfortune of driving through their territory. This consisted of Drayton Sawyer (The Cook), Nubbins Sawyer (The Hitchhiker), Grandpa Sawyer (Uhh... the grandfather) and Bubba Sawyer (Leatherface). In the remake series, the family surname is changed to Hewitt with the Leatherface character portrayed as Thomas Hewitt - the adoptive son of the Hewitt family. Other members of the family consist of Charlie Hewitt, aka Sheriff Hoyt, Luda Mae Hewitt, Old Monty, and a young boy named Jedidiah. Other associates of the family, which may or may not be blood relations, include Henrietta and the tea lady.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is largely considered to be inspired by the actions of real life serial killer Ed Gein, who murdered several people in Plainfield, Wisconsin between 1954 and 1957. Other sources have also drawn connections to Robert Bloch's seminal 1959 novel Psycho, which was adapted into the film, Psycho in 1960 by director Alfred Hitchcock. Themes that can be found in both the Ed Gein killings as well as the Psycho film series include transvestism (Psycho) and cannibalism (Gein).
