Stephen Hopkins is a Jamaican-born film director raised in Australia. In the early part of his career, he worked as a protégé and storyboard artist to video director Russell Mulcahy. Eventually branching off onto his own, he began directing his own films beginning with the 1989 A Nightmare on Elm Street sequel A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child.

The following year, Hopkins was tapped to direct another franchise sequel, Predator 2. During production of the film, actor Rubén Blades was giving a live TV interview to "Good Morning America" from the set when Hopkins walked on camera and loudly ordered him back to work. The incident was so embarrassing, Blades and Hopkins did another interview days later to apologise. [1]

Between 1991 and 1994, Hopkins directed three episodes of the HBO horror anthology series Tales from the Crypt. He directed "Abra Cadaver" from season 3, "Beauty Rest" from season 4, and "Staired in Horror" from season 6. "Abra Cadaver" was included on the 1994 Vault of Horror compilaton film.

In 2007, Hopkins directed The Reaping. Production on the film was originally slated for 2005 and was to be filmed in Louisiana, but was delayed due to Hurrican Katrina. It was originally scheduled for an August 11th, 2006 release date, but was eventually pushed back to April 5th, 2007.
