First Appearance | An American Werewolf in London (1981) |
St. Martin's Hospital was a hospital located in London, England. In the 1980s, the chief of medicine was Doctor J.S. Hirsch. Two of the attending nurses at the hospital were Alex Price and Susan Gallagher. In 1981, an American tourist named David Kessler was admitted to St. Martin's after suffering severe lacerations to the face and chest. It was believed that his injuries were caused by an escaped lunatic, but in fact, they were the result of a werewolf attack.
Kessler spent three weeks at St. Martin's recuperating from his injuries. When he was well enough to speak, he was greeted by Inspector Villiars and Sergeant McManus who asked him questions concerning the night of the attack. A member of the American consulate, Mister Collins, offered to contact David's family.
During this time, he began to suffer from intense nightmares. He even received a visitation from the ghost of his best friend Jack Goodman. Jack had been killed by the same werewolf that injured David. Jack told him that he was to now suffer the curse of the werewolf that David had to take his own life so that Jack's spirit could find peace. David was not entirely convinced that what he was hearing was real, and chalked it up to simply another strange nightmare. He was discharged the following day and went to stay with Nurse Price, with whom he had formed a romantic relationship.
Doctor Hirsch remained troubled by the official report on David's case and took it upon himself to visit the Northern England hamlet of East Proctor where David was first attacked. When he returned to St. Martin's, he told Alex a wild story about the villagers who seemed to suffer from a group neurosis concerning werewolves. At the very least, he feared that David might believe himself a werewolf and asked Alex to bring him back to the hospital as soon as possible.
As it turned out, David never returned to St. Martin's. He truly was a werewolf and was gunned down the following evening at Piccadilly Circus. Doctor Hirsch and Nurse Price were both on duty at the hospital when the news of the werewolf attacks were first reported.
