Dead Until Dark is the first book in "The Southern Vampire Mysteries" series by author Charlaine Harris. Published by Ace Books, the book was first released in both hardcover and paperback form in May of 2001. It was re-released in September of 2008 as part of the True Blood tie-in series. Dead Until Dark introduces the character of Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress and telepath from the fictional Louisiana town of Bon Temps. Sookie's small-town lifestyle is turned upside down when she meets the mysterious vampire known as Bill Compton.
