Rupert Julian, born Thomas Percival Hayes, was a film director, producer and actor of the silent era. He was born in Whangaroa, New Zealand on January 25th, 1879. He is best known for directing the first film version of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera in 1925. In 1930, he adapted John Willard's The Cat and the Canary into a film titled The Cat Creeps for Universal Pictures. In addition to his work behind the camera, Julian also acted in many of his own films as well as several others throughout the 1920s. His final film work was The Cat Creeps. Rupert Julian passed away in Hollywood, California on December 27th, 1943 at the age of 64.
