Ringu, or simply just Ring, is a Japanese horror film of the ghost subgenre. It was directed by Hideo Nakata and written by Hiroshi Takahashi, based on the 1991 novel by Kôji Suzuki. It was produced by the Omega Project, Imagica and Asmik Ace Entertainment and was released in Japan on January 31st, 1998. The premise of the film involves the ghost of a young girl named Sadako Yamamura who communes with people over an image recorded on a videotape. Whoever watches the tape however, mysteriously dies within seven days of having viewed it. The movie was remade by US production companies in 2006 and released as The Ring.
