Premature Burial is an American horror film of the psycho-thriller and period piece subgenres. It is based on the short story Premature Burial by author Edgar Allan Poe, which was first published in The Philadelphia Dollar Newspaper in 1844. The film adaptation of the story was directed and produced by Roger Corman for American International Pictures. It was written by Charles Beaumont and Ray Russell and released theatrically in the United States on March 7th, 1962. Premature Burial stars Ray Milland as Guy Carrell - a man suffering from catalepsy, which is a nervous disorder characterized by muscular rigidity and fixity of posture. Because of this, Carrell develops an obsessive fear of being buried alive.
