Paul Allen was a British gentleman who lived in England during the latter half of the 19th century. He was close friends with recluse Doctor Henry Jekyll, but was secretly carrying on an affair with Henry's wife, Kitty. Moreover, Paul was in great financial arrears and was persistently using the Jekyll's to gain money to satisfy his gambling debts.

- The character of Paul Allen was created by director Terence Fisher and writer Wolf Mankowitz based on concepts originally developed by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson.
- The role of Paul Allen is a unique archetype for actor Christopher Lee, who is generally used to playing more villainous roles such as Dracula or the Frankenstein Monster.
