Merian C. Cooper was an American filmmaker born in Jacksonville, Florida on October 24th, 1893. He is best known as the director, producer and screenwriter on the famous 1933 film King Kong. Cooper also produced the film's sequel, Son of Kong, which was released that same year.

Although King Kong is not a horror film, Cooper's first actual work in the genre was as a producer on The Monkey's Paw, based on the short story by W.W. Jacobs.

Merican Cooper passed away in San Diego, California on April 21st, 1973 at the age of 79.
