John D.F. Black was a film and television screenwriter as well as a producer and story editor. Though he has worked on numerous dramas and science fiction features over the years, his first work was co-writing the 1957 Boris Petroff sci-fi/horror film The Unearthly, which he wrote with Petroff's wife, Jane Mann. Black was credited under the name Geoffrey Dennis in this film.
