Jeffrey Grant Rice is an American novelist born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1944. He is the author of the novel The Kolchak Papers, which spawned the Kolchak television franchise, which began in 1972 with the television pilot movie The Night Stalker. The film was directed by Dark Shadows alum Dan Curtis and proved popular enough to spawn a second test-pilot called The Night Strangler. This too showed strong viewership and a script for a third film tentatively titled The Night Killers was pushed into production, but ABC decided instead to make a regular television series, which became Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Kolchak ran for a single season from 1974-1975 totalling twenty episodes.
Jeff Rice is not the only horror scribe who hails from Providence, Rhode Island. Providence is also the birth place of Howard Phillips "H. P." Lovecraft, who was born August 20th, 1890. Lovecraft was an iconic author of horror, fantasy and science fiction, especially the subgenre known as "weird fiction".
