Kindred is a term used to describe a vampire as featured in the roleplaying game Vampire: The Masquerade. Kindred vampires hail from various ancient clans (usually thirteen) that extend all the way back to the time of Cain - the first vampire. Also known as Cainites, Kindred vampires are "born" with specific powers and weaknesses common to their clan. Unlike traditional vampires however, who are typically loners, the Kindred work as part of a society, which usually entails internecine conflicts between the various clans. The Kindred political structure is divided into three established sub-groups, the Camarailla, the Sabbat and the Anarchs. Though divided on many issues, most Kindred follow a series of laws or Traditions, the most important of which is the Tradition of the Masquerade - a doctrine of secrecy that forbids vampires from revealing their true nature to the outside world.
