Don Mancini is an American screenwriter born on January 25th, 1963. He is best known as the creator of the Child's Play film series and is the metaphorical "father" of fan-favorite killer doll, Charles Lee Ray, aka, Chucky.
Career[]
Don Mancini's first professional film work was as a screenwriter on the 1988 horror fantasy film Cellar Dweller, directed by filmmaker John Carl Buechler and produced by Charles Band and Bob Wynn. Immediately following this, Mancini put together the plot and characters for what would become the first Child's Play film. The movie proved to be an overnight sensation and audiences fell in love with the sadistic killer doll, Chucky.
Following the success of the first Child's Play film, Mancini went on to script the movie's first sequel, Child's Play 2. As it became clear that Mancini and co. had a franchise on their hands, it was quickly determined that a second sequel would follow suit and Child's Play 3 was released only a year later. In 1998, a third sequel was filmed, this time abandoning the "Child's Play" title convention and harkening back towards the beloved Universal Monsters sequels of the 1940s. With director Ronny Yu at the helm, Mancini went to work on Bride of Chucky (a nod towards James Whale's 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein). In 2004, Don Mancini stepped behind the camera himself for the first time for Seed of Chucky. In addition to directing, Mancini also wrote the screenplay and was an executive producer on the film.
Outside of the Child's Play series, Don Mancini also wrote the screenplay for the season two episode of Tales from the Crypt entitled "Fitting Punishment".
