The ring is a piece of jewelry worn by the character Damon Salvatore on the CW Network television series The Vampire Diaries. Damon's brother, Stefan Salvatore has a matching ring and they are considered family heirlooms. The ring was first seen in the very beginning of the pilot episode on Damon's finger after he is "hit" by a car driven by Darren Malloy and Brooke Fenton. The close-up of the ring is actually a red herring aimed at making the audience believe that Stefan Salvatore is responsible for the deaths of Darren and Brooke when in fact it was Damon who committed the murders.
