Chris McCormick grew up in Prosperity, Arizona - the son of a man who owned the McCormick gold mines. He expressed a hidden fondness for a woman named Samantha Parker, but couldn't stand her husband. When Chris found out that he had been cheating on her, he punched the man in the nose and left town.

Chris' father later died due to a methane explosion in one of the mines. Chris came back to Prosperity after having been gone for ten years. He believed the stories that his father died shortly after discovering the highly valuable aqua mesa lode.

On the same day that Chris returned, giant spiders began cropping up all over town attacking people. He discovered that his aunt Gladys had been taken by a male orb-weaver spider and brought down into the minds as a gift for the queen. Chris consulted with a young boy named Mike Parker (Samantha's son), who possessed a keen understanding of spiders and how they operated.

While at the Parker residence, a large orb-weaver broke into the house and attacked Mike's sister, Ashley in her room. Chris burst into the room to help her, but was bound up in webbing. Samantha Carter came in brandishing a shotgun and killed the spider, after which, she freed Chris and Ashley.
