Belial is a demonic figure from Biblical lore, often associated with the Devil. He was first referenced in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Proverbs. The name denotes one who is lacking of worth or value. Proverbs 6:12 describes Belial or those attributed as the Sons of Belial as "a naughty person" and "a wicked man that walketh with a froward mouth". Belial's name is referenced in the Dead Sea Scrolls as the leader of the Sons of Darkness. In The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness, it is stated that Belial is meant to bring about wickedness and guilt, "All the spirits of his lot are angels of destruction, they walk in the laws of darkness; towards it goes their only desire". He is depicted as the leader of the army of the Sons of Darkness in The War Scroll. In apocrypha from the New Testament, Belial was among the 666 fallen angels who was present when the archangel Michael was commanded to show Hell to his disciples.

Belial's name has also been referenced in latter occult writings. He is named in the first book of the 17th century grimoire, The Lesser Key of Solomon (Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis) in Ars Goetia ("The Little Key of Solomon"). He is the 68th of 72 named demons and is addressed as a King.

DC Universe[]

As an elder demon, Belial was one of six who bequeathed attributes to the villain known as Sabbac, whose name was an acronym and served as a foe of Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel Junior. He represented the first "B" in Sabbac's name and granted the gift of evil wisdom.

One individual named Belial was subservient to the arch-duke known as Blathoxi - the Lord of Flatulance. This entity might have just shared the name Belial and may not have been the true demonic King. After John Constantine arrived in Hell with an offer to sell his soul to Blathoxi, Belial communicated with other demons, instructing them to sell all of their U.K. stock, and move into Catholics and Moslems. He encouraged expedience as the acquisition of Constantine's soul could create a panic in the exchange. [1]

Marvel Universe[]

An occultist named Brother Alistar the Archimage conducted a Satanic ritual in the Greenwich Village home of Gary Daley in which he invoked the name of Belial over a pentagram to curry favor in the hopes of being able to summon a demon named Zagan. [2]

Belial was a demonic servant of Marduk Kurios, who carried the title Satan. He was squat with white skin and had small downward sweeping ram horns. Christmas Eve was the one day a year that Satan actually slept. Belial came to his chambers the morning after with a goblet and platter and asked him if his slumber had been troubled. [3]

Belial was one of several demons, along with Nirrem, Ptyhonissa, Elyma, and Saphira, who possessed the corpse of a man named Estaban Ramirez. The devil hunter known as Gabriel Rosetti and his assistant Desadia labored to exorcise the entitites from Ramirez's body. [4]

A gnarled and aging witch woman named Mother Feeree conducted a ritual in which she entreated the favor of several demons including Belial, Mammon, and even Satan for the purposes of raising demon. [5]
