"First You Dream, Then You Die" is the first episode of season one of the suspense thriller series Bates Motel. The episode was directed by Tucker Gates and written by Carlton Cuse, Kerry Ehrin and Anthony Cipriano based on story concepts developed by author Robert Bloch. It first aired on A&E on Monday, March 18th, 2013.
Bates Motel is both a re-imagining and a prequel to the 1959 novel Psycho by Robert Bloch as well as the 1960 film adaptation of Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock. In terms of setting, the series actually has more in common with the 1990 made-for-TV movie Psycho IV: The Beginning.
The TV series stars Freddie Highmore as 17-year-old Norman Bates - an introverted and mentally unbalanced youth who is smothered by his cloying mother Norma Bates (played by Vera Farmiga). After an unfortunate event results in the death of Norman's father, Sam Bates, Norma decides to get a fresh start on life. Norman and she relocated from Phoenix, Arizona to the coastal town of White Pine Bay, Oregon where she purchases the Seafairer Motel, renaming it, the Bates Motel. The motel's previous owner however, Keith Summers, is quite disgruntled over losing his family business and decides to take out his aggression on an unsuspecting Norma. Norma fights back with deadly results and Norman and she must conspire to hide the body without arousing the suspicion of the town's sheriff, Alex Romero.
Meanwhile, Norman goes to school and finds himself quite popular amongst the female student body as well as some of the staff. He befriends a girl named Emma Decody and finds himself attracted to a blonde cheerleader named Bradley Martin.
Mysteries abound when Norman discovers a sketchbook in one of the motel room containing hand-drawn illustrations of Asian women in various states of bondage and torture.
