Arvin
Arvin
Notability: Antagonist
Gender: Male
Status: Dead
Actor: Andrew Stehlin

Arvin is a very merciless and ruthless vampire and part of a brood that followed vampire elder Marlow Roderick. When Roderick learned that the town of Barrow, Alaska endured thirty days of sunless winter, he brought his group to the small town so that they could feed indiscriminately without fear of hiding away from the effects of the sun.

One of Arvin's first victims was John and Ally Riis. Arvin leaped through the bay window of their home, snatching Ally and dragging her off into the night. John tried to rescue her, but Arvin broke his leg and slashed at his face. He dragged Ally underneath the pylons holding up the house and finished her off. He resumed his attack against John, turning him into a vampire even though such action was expressly forbidden by Marlow.

By Day 7, there were very few people left in Barrow. Arvin, Marlow and a female vampire named Iris used a frightened young woman named Kirsten Toomey as bait to draw out any humans that might still be in hiding. When she was no longer needed, Arvin plunged his fangs deep into her throat, killing her.

On Day 27, Arvin discovered several more survivors trying to make their way through a blizzard towards the town's utilidor. Breaking into the building, he attacked Deputy Billy Kitka, biting him on the neck. He then lunged for Sheriff Eben Oleson and began attacking him as well. Billy's wounds were severe and he knew that he only had moments before he would turn into a vampire as well. Mustering up the last of his strength, he charged Arvin and pushed him into a giant metal grinder (called the "Muffin Monster") where he was destroyed.

Notability: Supporting character
Gender: Male
Status: Dead
Actor: Mark Boone Junior

Beau Brower was a resident of the desolate town of Barrow, Alaska - one of the most remote regions in the state. He worked as a mechanic who lived out by himself on the South Ridge. Sheriff Eben Olesen came out to his place and found that he was leaking generator oil out of the back of one of his trucks. He gave him a citation, much to Beau's chagrin. Afterward, Deputy Billy Kitka asked Eben why he wrote Beau up. He told him that a little citation once in a while will remind him that he is still part of the community.

Every year, from November to December, the northernmost community in the world was plunged into thirty days of endless, sunless night. A brood of vampires, led by an elder named Marlow Roderick came to Barrow with the knowledge that they could feed indiscriminately without fear of hiding away from the effects of the sun. Marlow's group slaughtered their way through the town, gorging themselves on blood until there were only a small handful of people left. Eben and his estranged wife Stella went off to gather as many bear traps and flares as they could possibly find. They told the other survivors in the town that they would meet up with them at Charlie Kelso's attic. As they were driving, a nest of vampires attacked them and overturned Eben's police truck. Beau Brower, in a rare display of heroism, charged through the street with his bulldozer and smashed three vampires against the side of a building. Before Marlow and the others could get to them, Eben and Stella piled into Beau's truck and they drove off. They went to Kelso's house and found a secret entrance into the attic where met up with the others.

Later, Beau decided to create another diversionary tactic to give Eben another chance to escape. Driving his trencher tractor, he began plowing through random vampires. Several of them leaped onto the vehicle, but Beau picked them off with his shotgun. He crashed the tractor into the front of a hotel parlor to make his final stand. He lit two flares and dropped them into a box of dynamite as the vampires converged upon him. He hoped that the ensuing explosion would take out as many as the creatures as possible. Miraculously, Beau survived the explosion and was blasted out the window into the snow. Marlow Roderick approached him however and finished Beau off by crushing his skull in with his boot.

Billy Kitka was a resident of the desolate town of Barrow, Alaska - one of the most remote regions in the state. He worked as the town's deputy under Sheriff Eben Oleson.

Billy was separated from the other survivors and managed to hole up inside his house. As anxiety gave way to desperation, he decided that he would not allow his family to suffer at the hands of the savage vampires. He waited until they were asleep and shot his wife and two daughters in the head to spare them any further suffering.

Eben Oleson and several others found Billy following a massive blizzard towards the end of December. When Eben learned what he had done, he flew into a rage. Despite this, Eben brought Billy into the fold and the group decided to seek refuge at the nearby utilidor. The vampire Arvin followed them however and attacked Billy, sinking his fangs into his neck. He then turned his sights on Eben. Before Billy could succumb to the vampire infection, he saved Eben's life by pushing Arvin into the metal grinder, destroying him. Afterward, Eben was forced to put the now vampire Billy out of his misery by beheading him with an axe.

Notability: Supporting character
Gender: Male
Status: Dead
Actor: Nathaniel Lees

Carter Davies was a resident of the desolate town of Barrow, Alaska - one of the most remote regions in the state. Carter managed the underground utilidor.

To facilitate this, Marlow employed a human stranger to cut off all communication and transportation in and out of Barrow. Part of this phase of the plan included sabotaging the town's only helicopter, owned by Wilson Bulosan. The stranger took vital components from the helicopter to the utilidor and threw them into a large metal grinder which Carter affectionately referred to as "The Muffin Monster". Once Wilson and he discovered the vandalism, they contacted the town sheriff, Eben Oleson.

Marlow's group slaughtered their way through the town, gorging themselves on blood until there were only a small handful of people left. Carter was one of the lucky ones - at first. He met up with a group of other survivors at the Ikos Diner, but they knew that they would not be able to remain there for long. A young woman named Denise told Carter how the vampires murdered her friends Gabe and Aaron before her very eyes. She then recommended that the group should seek shelter in the hidden attic of a resident named Charlie Kelso. This tactic proved to be a logical if temporary solution to the problem. Within a week however, food and resources grew scarce and Carter and the others had to risk leaving the safety of the attic to restock their supplies.

The group ventured forth and made their way to Steve's General Store. As they entered, they discovered a little girl vampire feeding on the bloody remains of a young man named Tom Melanson. She charged at Eben who began swinging an axe at her, but she was far too fast for him. Carter Davies sprayed her with mace, which only briefly stunned her. The others pulled her off of him and pinned her to the wall, at which point, Eben's younger brother, Jake Oleson picked up Eben's axe and chopped her head off. Unfortunately, Carter had been bitten during the mêlée.

The group managed to make it from the general store to the Barrow Police Station before the infection began to overwhelm Carter. Tearfully, he revealed what had happened to the others, lamenting the loss of his wife and children (who were killed by a drunk driver some time ago) and how badly he wanted to be with them again. He could not abide the notion of living forever. Solemnly, Eben followed him into an adjacent room where he performed a mercy killing, cutting Carter's head off with two swift blows from his axe.

Charlie Kelso[]

Charlie Kelso
Charlie Kelso
Notability: Minor character
Gender: Male
Status: Alive

Charlie Kelso was an older man and a resident of Barrow, Alaska. Every winter from November to December, the town is subjected to thirty consecutive days of sunless night. Charlie Kelso was one of dozens of people who left Barrow during the cold, snowy, winter. After boarding up his house, he took his wife and children to Maui.

In the year 2007, a pack of vampires came to Barrow to take advantage of the month-long endless night. Cutting off communication to the outside world, they were able to feed indiscriminately without fear of the harmful rays of the rising sun to drive them into hiding. A group of survivors led by Sheriff Eben Oleson sought refuge inside of Charlie Kelso's empty home. Kelso's attic was quite spacious and was outfitted with a pull-down entrance-way that was crafted to match the mold of the ceiling, making it an ideal hideout. The survivors remained there for over a week before the need to restock on food and supplies forced them out of hiding.

Denise was outside her place of business with her friends Aaron and Gabe when the vampires first struck. She watched in horror as Gabe would pulled into the shadows and killed and Aaron and she barely escaped with their lives. Denise split up from Aaron and found sanctuary with a small group of survivors. She recommended using the secret attic of a resident named Charlie Kelso to hide from the vampires. The group remained there for several days until they were forced to come out to stock up on food and supplies.

They took up brief shelter at Steve's General Store and remained there while they waited out an intense blizzard. Several more members of the group were killed during this time, but Denise survived and was one of the last residents of Barrow left alive after the vampires finally left.

Marlow's group slaughtered their way through the town, gorging themselves on blood until there were only a small handful of people left.

At the recommendation of a young woman named Denise, Doug and a small group of survivors holed up at the abandoned attic of a man named Charlie Kelso. Tensions ran high within the group. Some wanted to stay secluded and hide, but Doug preferred to take his chances fighting the vampires. In this instance, cooler heads prevailed and Doug remained with the group. Within a week however, food and resources grew scarce and Doug and the others had to risk leaving the safety of the attic to restock their supplies. The group ventured forth and made their way to Steve's General Store. As they entered, they discovered a little girl vampire feeding on the bloody remains of a young man named Tom Melanson. Sheriff Eben Oleson and Carter Davies fought the vampire, but it was Eben's younger brother Jake who finally did her in.

By Day 18, the group decided to follow Sheriff Oleson and make their way to the underground utilidor. As they silently walked through the snow, a vampire woman with long, blonde hair leaped down from the room of a building and pounced on him. She tore away at his throat as the others begin to run and Doug was killed.

Actor: Josh Hartnett

Eben Oleson was the sheriff of North Slope Borough in the small town of Barrow, Alaska. He was married to a Fire Marshall named Stella, but their marriage became strained and the two eventually separated. Eben's grandmother, Helen Munson and his younger brother Jake often helped out by working at the police station. His closest friend was Deputy Billy Kitka.

In the winter of 2007, Barrow underwent it's annual thirty days of sunless winter. Eben and Billy watched the final sunset together, a tradition they had established between themselves and maintained every winter. It was at this time however, that Eben began noticing a series of bizarre, inexplicable crimes taking place throughout the borough. Billy and he found a pile of cell phones that had been set on fire and he later learned that somebody had slaughtered a kennel full of sled dogs belonging to John and Ally Riis. The oddities continued, in particular when Eben encountered a gruff stranger at the Ikos Diner, who behaved in a threatening manner and issued cryptic warnings about things that were to come. Eben arrested the stranger, but minutes after locking him up, he learned about some more random acts of vandalism. Carter Davies, manager of the utilidor, reported how someone had sabotaged Wilson Bulosan's helicopter. They also lost contact with Gus Lambert, the man who normally operated the telecom station. It soon became clear that someone, or something, was deliberately trying to isolate the town, cutting off all communication with the outside world.

As all of the power in Barrow went down, Eben went to the station to find Gus Lambert. What he found instead was Gus' severed head impaled on a fence post. When he returned to the police station, he arrived just in time to prevent the eerie stranger from breaking out. Eben shot him once in the shoulder then handcuffed him to the bars of his cell.

Eben and Stella got into the police truck and drove towards the pipeline to find Billy Kitka. As they continued forward, a vampire leaped upon the top of the truck and began pounding on the roof. Eben fired his sidearm through the roof and succeeded in knocking him off.

As panic began to slowly overwhelm the people of Barrow, an entire horde of vampires decided to reveal themselves. The leader of the brood was a man named Marlow Roderick. He was attended by Zurial, Kali, Arvin, Iris and several others. They engaged in wholesale slaughter, murdering every human they could find, making certain however, not to turn any of them into vampires. One of their unfortunate victims was Eben's grandmother. Eben and a small group of people managed to evade them temporarily and met at the Ikos Diner. At the suggestion of a girl named Denise, the survivors sought refuge in the secret attic of a man named Charlie Kelso.

Eben and Stella went off to gather as many bear traps and flares as they could possibly find. They told the others that they will meet up with them at Kelso's attic. A nest of vampires attacked them and overturned the police truck. A local man named Beau Brower came to their aid, driving the vampires away with his bulldozer. They then piled into Beau's truck and took off for Kelso's hidden attic.

By the seventh day, their supplies began to run low, but they were all still alive. Eben believed that if they could make it to Steve's General Store to refresh their supplies, then they might be able to relocate to the utilidor, which was significantly larger than the cramped attic room.

Eben went out and found John Riis hiding underneath his house. He had apparently been there ever since the vampires took Ally. Eben helped him out, but soon discovered that John was now a vampire. He was starving however, and barely had the strength to chase after him. John lunged at Eben, but got himself tied up in a swing set. Eben picked up an axe and hacked away at John's head until it finally fell to the ground.

As the snow began to worsen, Eben met back up with the others and told them that it was time to make a go for the general store. They reached the empty establishment, but as they gathered their supplies, they encountered a little girl vampire feeding off the beheaded body of a man. She charged at Eben who began swinging his axe, but she was too fast for him. It was actually his brother Jake who saved the day by taking up Eben's axe and chopping the little vampire's head off.

By day 18, the whiteout had ended and they were able to leave the store. Stella deduced that these creatures might be vulnerable to sunlight. She recalled that Helen Munson maintained a UV lamp array in her home for growing marijuana. If someone were to create a diversion, one of them might be able to make it to the house and secure the lamp. Eben, Jake and Stella argued over who should be the one to create the diversion, but ultimately Eben decided that he would be the one to go.

He left the store with his axe and began running through the streets, shouting out loud to draw the vampires' attention. When he got to his mother's house, He started up the generator in the garage. The vampires circled around the area and Iris charged through the front door. Eben activated the UV lamp, causing severe burns across the vampire's face. Eben met up with the others back at the police station, but now they faced another problem. Carter Davies revealed that the little girl from the general store bit him and he is now a vampire. Eben followed him into the adjacent room where he performed a mercy killing, cutting Carter's head off with two swift blows from his axe.

By day 27, Eben finally reunited with Billy Kitka, whom he was surprised to see still alive. He was horrified however, when he discovered that Billy elected to kill his own wife and children to spare them the possibility of becoming food for the vampires laying waste to the town outside their home. Eben shook Billy, admonishing him for the rash decisions he had made. The plan was still to reach the utilidor at any cost. The group trudged out into the snow, but Eben had to help Billy along. They eventually reached the utilidor, but a vampire named Arvin found them and attacked Eben. Billy Kitka partially redeemed himself by saving Eben's life, but at the cost of his own humanity. Billy was turned into a vampire. As with the others, Eben was forced to destroy him with several strong blows from his axe.

Staring out a window from the utilidor, Eben realized that the only way to truly defeat these monsters was with another monster. Embarking upon a risky gambit, Eben took a syringe from a first aid kit and collected a sample of Billy's blood from his now-headless body. He then injected the vampire blood into his forearm. He believes that he could hold on to his humanity long enough to hopefully make a difference.

Eben went out into the snow to face the vampire leader, Marlow Roderick. The two began fighting and Eben surprised Marlow with how strong he had become. The two traded blows and Marlow maintained the upper hand, but ultimately, Eben was able to end Marlow's undead existence by punching his fist through his head. When the others saw that their leader had fallen, they left Eben alone and elected to leave Barrow.

A tearful Stella understood the sacrifice that Eben was required to make to save their lives. Though he still held onto his humanity momentarily, Eben was now a full vampire and this was the last night of winter. Stella and he went out onto the ridge to watch the sun rise. As the sun came up over the horizon, Eben's skin turned black and he died in Stella's arms.

The others made it to the utilidor, but Stella and Gail lagged behind. As the vampires converged on their position, they decided to hide underneath an abandoned vehicle. Marlow and the others realized that winter was nearly over and that the sun would soon be rising. After Marlow impaled Adam, he nodded his approval to Iris to feed on Jeannie. The vampire flipped the defenseless woman over, smashing her onto the floor then tore open her throat with her fangs to drink her blood.

Actor: Danny Huston

Marlow Roderick was a vampire in service to an elder named Vicente. In 2002, Marlow learned about an isolated region known as Barrow in the US state of Alaska. For thirty days out of every year from November 18th to December 17th, the entire town is plunged into a month-long frigid, endless night with no sun. Such an environment was perfect hunting ground for any vampire. Vicente was intrigued to learn about this and ordered Marlow to take his brood and go to Barrow ahead of him.

Marlow found a human stranger to aide him in his cause. Through this agent, Marlow as able to keep Barrow completely cut off from the outside world by sabotaging their transportation and communication systems. Once this was achieved, Roderick and his brood descended upon the town and began feeding indiscriminately. The stranger had hoped that Marlow would repay him by turning him into a vampire, but instead, Marlow simply killed him. One of the residents that Marlow personally killed was Adam Colletta. Adam tried to defend himself by shooting Marlow, but the shot proved ineffective. The vampire repaid him by pinning him against a wall and impaling him with a hot fire poker.

By day 7, the human population of Barrow was virtually non-existent and finding prey proved more difficult. Marlow and several of his lieutenants captured a young woman named Kirsten Toomey and used her as bait to draw out other possible survivors. When this tactic failed, Kirsten broke down crying, praying to God. Marlow told her that there was "no God" and began slashing at her face. His crony, Arvin, finished her off.

Marlow's next failure came three weeks later. Sheriff Eben Oleson, one of the survivors, managed to escape the onslaught and made it back to his mother's house. Marlow and another vampire named Iris followed him and prepared to raid the home. When the door opened however, Eben shined a sun lamp at them, severely injuring Iris. Marlow drew her back, but seeing that she was now "broken" decided to end her existence.

On Day 27 of the sunless winter, Marlow Roderick decided that he had his fill of Barrow and made preparations to leave. Under his orders, the vampires opened up an oil pipeline and set it afire with the intent of burning the entire town to the ground. Sheriff Oleson believed that the only way to stop a vampire was with another vampire. He injected himself with vampire blood hoping that he could stave off the bloodlust effects long enough to stop Roderick. Now benefiting from a vampire's strength and endurance, he went out into the snow and challenged Roderick. Marlow was a very old vampire however and his long years of experience gave him a tactical edge over Oleson. Eben got in one lucky, fatal shot however when he plunged his fist through Marlow's face and out the back side of his head. With their leader gone, the surviving vampires quickly abandoned Barrow, Alaska.

Notability: Main character

Stella Oleson was a resident of Barrow, Alaska where she worked as a Fire Marshall. She was married to Sheriff Eben Oleson, but their marriage was strained when Eben didn't share Stella's enthusiasm for having children. The two were separated, but Stella kept in contact with Eben and continued to work in Barrow.

Every year, from November to December, the northernmost community in the world was plunged into thirty days of endless, sunless night. Stella tried to leave Barrow before the winter season started, but a traffic collision with a man named Malekai Hamm prevented her from getting to the airport in time. Stella was reluctant to call upon her husband for aide, but a man named Adam Colletta offered her a place to stay.

A group of vampires, led by a man named Marlow Roderick, decided that such a climate would make for an ideal feeding ground, and they could hunt indiscriminately without fear of the deadly sun to drive them back. Marlow sent a human agent, a stranger, ahead of his group to cut off all ties between Barrow and the outside world. The stranger did as instructed and destroyed all of the cell phones in the area as well as sabotaging the communications center, and every other means of personal travel. He then went to the Ikos Diner where he encountered Stella and Eben. When the man proved unruly and prone to violence, Stella pulled her firearm and pointed it at the back of his head. Eben arrested him and brought him back to the station.

The damage was already done however. Roderick and his vampire brood descended upon the town and began slaughtering people at random. Eben and Stella were driving away from the police station when a vampire landed on the roof of the sheriff's truck. While Eben leaned out the window to try and shoot him down, Stella took control of the steering wheel.

They managed to meet up with a small group of survivors and they all took shelter in the attic of the empty home of a man named Charlie Kelso. They managed to remain there for seven days before their supplies began to run low. One of the group, an elderly man named Isaac Bulosan began growing frantic and left the security of the house. His son Wilson tried to chase after him, but Stella restrained him, warning Wilson that if they go out into the snow, they will give away their position. Wilson shrugged her off and Stella fell backward, slamming her head upon the newel post of a banister.

Before long, the group was left with little choice but to leave the shelter to restock on food and supplies. They went to Steve's General Store where they had a harrowing encounter with a little girl vampire. It was Stella's teenage brother-in-law, Jake Oleson, who mustered up the strength to destroy the creature.

By Day 27, the surviving members of the group agreed that the safest place for them to go would be the utilidor. While trudging through the snow, Stella noticed a young girl, Gail Robbins, stumbling about. Gail had just lost her family to a vampire attack and was now totally alone. Stella separated from the group to help her, but was unable to reach the utilidor. To hide from the vampires, Stella and Gail crawled underneath an abandoned truck. The vampires did not notice them, but by this point, they had more to fear from the elements as they quickly began to freeze to death.

Marlow and his brood knew that there were very few humans left in Barrow and that it was time to leave. They cut into an oil pipeline and set it on fire with the intent of burning the entire town to the ground. Eben saw what they were doing and knew that the flames would quickly reach Stella's location. Eben realized that the only way to truly defeat these monsters was with another monster.

Stranger, The[]

The Stranger
Notability: Antagonist
Gender: Male
Status: Dead
Actor: Ben Foster

The stranger was a human who was approached by vampire Marlow Roderick and recruited to serve as the instrument through which he would prepare for a coming feeding frenzy in the desolate town of Barrow, Alaska. The stranger believed that if he did as Marlow asked, he would be rewarded by being turned into a vampire. The stranger's job was to isolate Barrow from the outside world by cutting off all means of external communication and transportation. The most opportune time to do this was during mid November when Barrow would be plunged into thirty days of endless, sunless night - the perfect environment for vampires. First, he gathered up as many cell phones as he could find in the town and destroyed them. Then he cut off power to the communications station and sabotaged Wilson Bulosan's helicopter. He also slaughtered the sled dogs owned by John and Ally Riis. Once he was done, there was nothing left to do but wait.

The residents of Barrow first learned about the stranger when he came into the Ikos Diner. Surly and unkempt, he demanded whiskey and a plate of raw hamburger. The proprietor of the diner, Lucy Ikos, told him that the sale of alcohol was restricted during the winter months and she refused to serve him the raw meat as he requested. The stranger grew agitated and behaved in a threatening manner. Sheriff Eben Oleson came in and tried to calm the stranger down, but when he refused to back off, Even's estranged wife, Stella Oleson came up behind him and leveled a revolver at his head. Eben took the stranger into custody and locked him up at the North Slope Borough police station. While locked up, the stranger baited Eben's young brother Jake Oleson into coming up to the cell, at which point, he reached through the bars and attacked him. Eben returned just in time and shot the stranger in the shoulder, forcing him to release Jake.

Shortly thereafter, Marlow Roderick and his vampire brood descended upon the town. They committed wholesale slaughter, feeding indiscriminately off of anyone they could find. Marlow eventually made his way to the police station where the stranger expected him to honor his promise to make him a vampire. Roderick had no intention of giving the man what he wanted and snapped his neck with his bare hands.
